NOTICE TO THE PRESS

Travel by Secretary Powell to Asia

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will travel to Japan, Vietnam, the
Republic of Korea, the People's Republic of China, and Australia, July
22 - August 1.

Secretary Powell will arrive in Tokyo July 23 for meetings with key
officials and then travel to Hanoi, where he will attend the ASEAN
Regional forum (ARF) and the ASEAN Post-Ministerial conference (PMC)
July 24-26. While in Hanoi for these meetings, Secretary Powell will
also meet bilaterally with a number of representatives from the region.

From Hanoi, the Secretary will travel to Seoul (July 27) and Beijing
(July 28) for meetings with senior officials.

From Beijing, the Secretary will travel to Canberra where he and
Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld will participate with their
Australian counterparts in our annual Australia-U.S. ministerial
(AUSMIN) consultations on July 30. Secretary Powell will depart
Canberra on July 31.
