미국, 버마 민주화 지원

미국 정부는 버마 국민의 기본적인 참정권을 부정하는 국가평화개발위원회(SPDC∙국가법질서회복위원회(SLORC)의 후신)의 행태를 강력하게 규탄한다.

미국 정부는 인권 유린 상황의 종식을 기원하는 동시에 민주주의 절차에 따라 버마에 새로운 정부가 수립되기를 희망하며 자신의 정치적 견해를 자유롭게 피력하고 지도자를 직접 선출할 수 있는, 세계 다른 나라에서는 이미 당연시되고 있는 민주적 권리를 갈망하는 버마 국민과 전국민주연대(NLD)의 열망을 지지한다. 근본적인 변화가 이뤄지지 않는 한 버마는 국제사회의 온전한 일원이 될 수 없으며 해외 원조도 기대할 수 없다. 미국 정부는 버마 당국과 민주화 운동 지도자 그리고 각 민족계파 대표들로 구성된 의미 있는 정치적 대화의 장만이 버마 문제를 해결할 수 있는 유일한 방법이라는 입장을 견지하고 있다.
